The Strontian Area
Strontian is situated at the head of Loch Sunart on the Ardnamurchan penninsula. It gave the element Strontium its name having been identified in the granite hills above the village in 1790. It has a thriving population and is home to the recently built Ardnamurchan Community High School , with library and facilities which are superb. Throughout the year there are regular events held here which may be of interest to the visitor.
The population is rising but stands at about 400 folks and the village stretches out towards Acharacle and over to Loch Shiel past magnificent mountain scenery with wildlife abounding. You may even catch a rare sight of a golden eagle, an otter or the nocturnal pine martin. There are few restrictions and unhindered access to rural and coastal walks. A nature reserve at Ariundle allows beauitiful woodland walking.
There is a Tourist Information Centre (closed Nov - March), a mini market and a post office/ general store. The latter is the last place you can purchase petrol as you go west down the penninsula.
